Oscar Pistorius - appeal

The prosecutor in this case is appealing that the prison sentence is too lenient. Not being at the trial, it is hard to know if this is so. He is likely to be out under house arrest after about just 10months and that does sound not much for shooting dead someone. My inclination is to let South African justice take its course.

Oscar Pistorius verdict

5 years in gaol, but he is eligible for parole in just 10 months. Not being party to all the evidence, I have no idea if this is fair or not.

South Africa is violent country and he probably had to react in great haste. In the calm of the day and thousands of miles away it is too easy to say, "he should not have shot through the bathroom door", but I don't know how I would have reacted in a similar situation.

Sounds to me like he was lucky to get such a lenient sentence.

Pistorius not guilty

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-29143540 . I hear Oscar Pistorius has been found not guilty of the murder charge but may yet face a custodial charge. Not being there, I am in no position to judge. I just hope the final verdict is fair to all involved. Clearly Pistorius fired the gun, but what s unclear is whether he intended to kill the occupant of the toilet where his girlfriend was. Even if he believed that an intruder was in the toilet, were 4 bullets needed?
