Sunsets - getting later from tomorrow here
Although mornings get darker until early January the sunset gets later from December 18th here. Winter Solstice is Dec 21st (Wednesday).
At first the change is very slow, but at least we are moving in the right direction!
We'll blink and it will be the longest day. By the end of January the sun sets almost an hour later.
I enjoy all seasons, but look forward to lighter evenings.

Sunset
We are at the "pits" end of the year as far as sunlight is concerned, but the evenings start to get lighter from mid December
here even though the mornings get darker for a few weeks more. By the end of
January the evenings are getting better light-wise by almost an hour.
February is a short month. It is good to think the nights will soon be
getting lighter again. It may be a little different where you live.

Sunsets
The evenings are getting much lighter now with sunset now 5.53pm. At Christmas the sun was setting here around 3.50pm. In a few weeks' time we go over to British Summer Time and then we really will be in Spring.
I am also waking up earlier, suggesting the mornings are getting much lighter too. Sunrise is currently 6.29am, although it is actually light about 30 minutes earlier.

Longer days
Already the evenings are about 30 minutes lighter than they were and the rate of increase speeds up as we get further through the month. I noticed that quite a lot of daffodils are in bloom in Cambridge. Well before the end of January is very early indeed.
By mid February, when we do our walk at nearby Landwade, we expect to see all manner of winter flowers in bloom.

Sunrise and sunset calculator
See http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/sunrise.html .
If you are like me, you want to know when the sun rises and sets locally. This calculator may be what you need. Here, near Cambridge, the nights start to get lighter from this coming Thursday (Dec 18th) although it is not until Jan 10th until the mornings start to get lighter.
